Paper tape and fibreglass mesh reinforce joints differently. Paper tape is embedded into wet joint compound and includes a centre crease that allows it to form straight inside corners, while self-adhesive mesh uses an open fibreglass grid. Mesh is commonly paired with setting-type compound because the hardened material provides greater joint strength than relying on lightweight drying compound alone. Tape selection therefore depends on joint geometry and the compound system rather than convenience alone.
Setting-type compounds harden primarily through a chemical reaction and are commonly identified by approximate working times such as 20, 45 or 90 minutes. Premixed drying compounds harden mainly through evaporation, making coat thickness, temperature, ventilation and relative humidity important to drying time. Inside corners require a continuous, straight transition where two drywall surfaces intersect. Creased paper tape can be embedded along the angle, after which compound is applied in controlled coats without excessive accumulation at the corner apex. Corner trowels and appropriately sized taping knives can assist the process, but maintaining a clean intersection is essential because uneven compound at the angle remains noticeable after painting.
Drywall screw heads create numerous small depressions that must disappear without leaving raised spots across the finished board. Compound is applied tightly over properly set fasteners, with successive applications filling shrinkage until the depressions become flush with the surrounding surface. A screw that projects above the board or has broken through the face paper should be addressed before finishing because joint compound cannot correct an improperly secured panel.

Final compound applications are extended beyond the earlier coats so the transition from joint material to gypsum-board face becomes progressively less noticeable. Wider taping knives or finishing boxes can distribute a thin layer over a broader area while maintaining consistent pressure. The objective is not to build a thick coating across the wall, but to minimize abrupt changes in surface plane that can become visible after paint is applied.
Sanding removes minor lap marks, ridges and tool lines after the compound has dried completely. Drywall abrasives commonly fall around the 120–220 grit range depending on the finishing stage and product, with finer abrasives useful for final surface refinement. Excessive pressure can expose joint tape, roughen drywall face paper or create depressions in softer compound, potentially requiring another application rather than improving the finish.
A Level 5 finish adds a thin skim coat across the entire gypsum-board surface after joints and fasteners have received their specified treatment. Its purpose is to reduce differences in surface texture and porosity between joint compound and drywall face paper. This higher finish level can be appropriate where strong critical lighting, large uninterrupted surfaces or higher-sheen coatings would otherwise emphasize subtle variations in the substrate.
Paint preparation begins before primer reaches the wall. Finished surfaces can be examined with directional lighting to reveal sanding scratches, pinholes, ridges and feathered edges that ordinary room lighting may conceal. Remaining drywall dust must also be removed because loose particulate can interfere with primer adhesion and surface uniformity. Correcting these defects at the finishing stage is generally more effective than attempting to hide them with additional paint.
Bubbles usually indicate that part of the paper tape has not bonded continuously to the compound beneath it. Causes can include insufficient bedding compound, compound that became too dry before embedding, or excessive knife pressure that removed too much material from behind the tape. Additional compound applied over an unbonded section does not restore the missing bond underneath, so loose areas generally need to be corrected before subsequent finishing coats.
Pinholes can develop when small air pockets become trapped in compound and open at the surface as it is applied or dries. Mixing technique, application thickness, substrate porosity and repeated working of the material can influence their formation. Because paint can make these defects more noticeable, visible pinholes should be filled during the finishing process rather than relying on primer to conceal them.
Additional joint coats only widen and refine treated seams and fasteners. A Level 5 finish adds a thin skim coat over essentially the entire drywall surface, helping equalize texture and porosity between gypsum-board face paper and areas covered with joint compound. This distinction becomes valuable under critical lighting or finishes that make small substrate differences readily visible.

Excessive sanding can remove more than tool marks. It may polish some areas while exposing tape, scuffing gypsum-board face paper or creating shallow depressions beside joints, producing inconsistent surface texture and absorption. The goal is a uniformly prepared plane, not an excessively polished surface; remaining defects are better corrected with a thin compound application than aggressive sanding.
